Ismael de Anda III in art gallery

There are two points in the Ismael de Anda III art display at the Cerritos College art gallery that are very interesting.

The first is in the smaller room, the entire room is more than just art, it tells a story. The story was about the porch swing at his grandparents' ranch that he always remembered.

It tells the story of how it was destroyed and rebuilt. And he made different kinds of art (models, text, pictures) to tell the story in different ways.

The second is that a couple of his artworks encourages participation from others.

The large painting on the wall (that was painted directly on the wall), he didn't paint. But he instructed the art staff on how to paint it.

There's also a large frame (which he also painted on the wall), that he's encouraging viewers to drive a nail into it along the frame.

It'll be very interesting to see it when it's finished.

The exhibition datets are from Feb. 24 to March 24.

The opening reception will be on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.

The artist's walkthrough will be on March 10 at 3 p.m.

Editors Day

Talon Marks adviser Rich Cameron held an Editors Day for college papers in the area to come to Cerritos and have discussions about the issues we face on a campus newspaper.

I found it very informative and I enjoyed talking with the other editors.

I learned a few tips on how to promote the MySpace page better, wish friends happy birthdays. It draws them to your page.

I also got a few notes down on some page designs for TalonMarks.com.

Right now, I'm glad that I was able to create all the section pages. Now, I want them each to have their own visual style.

It was fun to listen to controversial material that other papers published that made our stories not seem so bad.

Cosmetology in a new light

I have looked at the list of services the Cosmetology Department has to offer but never considered going here to get a haircut.

Considering a haircut at SuperCuts is about $15, a $5 haircut at Cerritos doesn't seem so bad.

It sounds great, actually.

The department should explain on its fliers how it operates.

How many students really know that advisers watch over students to make sure everyone is comfortable?

That has to be the main concern of everyone that doesn't want their hair cut by a student.

The department's hours aren't great, but a lot of students should be able to squeeze in a visit between classes.

The hours are:
• Monday and Wednesday, 11:30 to 3:30 p.m.,
• Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 3:30 p.m. and
• Friday and Saturday, 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Maps for the campus

Discussions took place at this week's ASCC Cabinet meeting to put up signs throughout the Cerritos College campus with maps on them.

The reason for this is because the signs with arrows now aren't very helpful.

That's true, they're not. They provide a guide to let you know you're heading in the right direction, but they're not very detailed.

Maps around campus are a good idea.

Maps are already on the Talon Marks newsstands, however.

They need to be updated, but they're already there.

Plus, they're black and white drawings. If they are to be updated, they could use come color to attract the eye and be more noticeable for people that are lost.

There's an alternative for the ASCC instead of spending money on new signs.

Talon Marks Committee

The ASCC has established a Talon Marks committee because it is not happy with what goes on in the newspaper.

I have been hearing things that are shocking to me because none of it has been said directly to me.

What upsets me most about this is that no one has talked to me about anyone having a problem with the paper.

The purpose of the committee would be if someone had come to me with problems he or she says and I don't listen.

However, that hasn't happened. I have only directly heard positive comments about the paper.

I have heard that lies are being spread about me even.

And I am put into a position that I cannot defend myself or my paper because no one is saying it to me.

Communication goes both ways. I have no problem with the ASCC and I would say something if I did. I hoped for the same courtesy from the ASCC had a problem with the Talon Marks.

Updated Master Plan

This campus construction plan came to me last month and it has some great improvements.

The best improvement is that no tennis courts are going away. Tennis tournaments require a minimum number of courts and the old plan was going to bring Cerritos under that minimum.

As it appears, the parking spots are all going to go horizontally rather than diagonally.

Apparently, that adds more spaces. But the advantage to diagonal spaces is to force drivers to drive only one way down an aisle.

I would think having horizontal spaces would require wider aisles to allow people to go both ways.

The Hill stays. Thanks to ASCC President Michael Barrita and other student government members, that hill of grass isn't going anywhere.

The old soccer field stays. That's good for the PE program.

I thought it wasn't essential since the program only had one field to start. The school just had the new field built before tearing the old one down so not to eliminate soccer on campus for the time being.

But the "practice fields" are here to stay.

The corner of Alondra Boulevard and Studebaker Road has been changed as well. The old plan had more of a rounded parking area and now it's more squared off. It looked nicer rounded but there is probably a reason why it was changed.

Health cost decided... yes

It didn't surprise me that it was passed in the ASCC Senate that the health service fee is going up by $2.

Money is tight for everyone. Costs on everything are going up and people are making less money to spend.

But it's just another couple dollars. It's not a big deal and I got that sense from the senate that the whole group felt the same way.

With this rise in cost, maybe more students will take advantage of the service to get their money worth.

I picked up a pamphlet from the office. I'm definitely going to give it a try.
